Riyadh Sports Academy

Riyadh, KSA 2021

Al-Riyadi is a Saudi football team. It was established in 1953 as Ahli Al-Riyadh, then changed to Al-Yamamah and finally to Al-Riyadi. The existing facility in the historic area of Wadi Laban is a 90,000m2 site that holds within its realm a sports facility building, a covered pool, two football stadiums, a Mosque and parking lots. The brief requires to add a retail strip on the busy Taef Street, a cinema building, a training camp and an apartment building. The proposed scheme introduced to the existing facility a mixed use grandstands that double as a retail strip reorganizing and marking the entrances. Branding possibilities and exteriorizing the club's activities was also a major concern. The steel structure acts as a landmark from the street as well as a support for the grand stand and cover roof for the shops. The multifunctional structure is 15m high and gives a 360 panoramic view towards the area.

The scope also includes the rehabilitation of the existing road network towards and inside the facility, greening the space, creating outdoor playgrounds and resting facilities. The mosque’s back piazza is to be re-integrated within the overall masterplan by adding new wet areas, fountains and green spaces. The parking space is to be extended and greened, providing extra shade for pedestrians and cars. The camp will host players for all around the city and country, providing them with comfortable lodging and training facilities during season time. Smart rooms and buildings will be designed and a top notch signalization system will be designed and implemented.
