DAJH Commissioned New Project on the Shores of Banjul, Gambia

Banjul, the capital city of Gambia in West Africa, boasts a seashore that is both scenic and culturally rich. Situated on St. Mary's Island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean, Banjul's seashore offers a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant local life. The Banjul seashore is characterized by its wide, sandy beaches that stretch along the coastline, providing an inviting spot for both relaxation and recreation.

The sands are typically golden, and the beaches are relatively uncrowded, making it an ideal location for those seeking a tranquil seaside experience. The gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean create a soothing ambiance, perfect for sunbathing or leisurely walks along the shore. The city of Banjul was founded by the British in the early 19th century as a trading post and a base to suppress the slave trade. This history is reflected in various colonial-era buildings that still stand today, adding a historical depth to the seashore's appeal.

The 40,000 m2 site’s proximity to the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center and the natural preserve Bijilo Forest Park, often known as Monkey Park, presents a remarkable opportunity to design a resort that serves as an oasis for conference attendees, tourists and locals, providing them with a seamless transition from professional engagements to relaxation and recreation.

The architecture of the resort will draw inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty and cultural heritage of Gambia, incorporating elements that reflect the local aesthetic while offering state-of-the-art amenities. The resort’s design will feature eco-friendly, sustainable practices, ensuring minimal environmental impact while maximizing guest comfort. The use of locally sourced materials will not only reduce the carbon footprint but also support the local economy and showcase Gambian craftsmanship. The buildings will be designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape, with low-rise structures that maintain unobstructed views of the ocean and the horizon.
